_lenaackermann @GretchenAMcC @lingthusiasm That (hearing) babies are born as "universal listeners" that can discriminate non-native sound contrasts, but that they lose this ability by 10-12 months of age as their auditory perception fine-tunes to the language(s) around them 👶🏼
_lenaackermann @GretchenAMcC @lingthusiasm That there are systematic differences between German and other Germanic languages resulting from the High German consonant shift & that you have a pretty good shot at guessing Dutch words based on German if you just keep those in mind - I like to use peppermint milk as an example
emilymbender Some key terms aren't sufficiently defined: bias, stakeholder, and "accuracy", as in "modelers will almost always select the most accurate models"—as if "score on test data" is a good measure of "accuracy" and biased results are somehow compatible with "accuracy".

emilymbender The report talks about "exacerbating distrust" and things like the risk of public opinion about AI turning negative ... when in fact distrust might be the healthiest position for the public to take!

emilymbender ""a benefit of automated technology is that it can make sense of information more quickly and consistently than humans"
That's a big no. Sense-making is a human activity; that's not something that machines can do -- either now or in the foreseeable future.

emilymbender First, the uncritical use of the term "AI", with apparent references to the currently ubiquitous big-data-fed pattern recognition systems is grating. But I guess AI is what people say they are building, so that's what the standards body has to call it too?

rctatman I've noticed a slight uptick recently of folks reaching out to me asking for help with NLP problems where the underlying problem is one I consider unsolvable (at least practically). 😣
Here are some questions you to ask yourself *before* you invest a lot of time.
rctatman 🤔Do you have a good/easy way to measure success? Can you tell if your model has actually done the thing you want it to?
If you can't, framing it as an ML problem is going to be extremely hard.
Also: do you really want to build something where you can't tell if it's working? 👀
rctatman ✅A data plan showing that you have an appropriate volume of high quality training data that closely approximates what your model will see once it's been deployed, and that is appropriately licensed.
❌ Eh, I'm sure we can scrape enough random web text
yoavgo so this just suggest to me that the field is transforming, and it is no longer about "algorithms" per-se, but, maybe paradoxically, it is much more about language than it used to be. this is where all the interesting questions are, imo:
yoavgo while today you just train a neural net end-to-end out of the box, get a decent result, then fuck a while with the hyper-parameters to get a good result. and then you are kinda stuck because (a) there is no obvious place to introduce "smart" things; and (b) they still don't work.
yoavgo in the "old days", you had an idea on how to improve, and:
a) it took you a while to figure out how to change the system.
b) it took you a while to figure out the technical details of the solution.
c) it took you a while to implement the change.
lots of "work" and "creativity".
yoavgo ...3) and frankly the situation in pre-neural NLP wasn't that much better: it was a bunch of heuristics, which we didn't fully understand, and didn't fully control, and, on top of that, things worked substantially worse in terms of actual accuracy. but it was more fun.

nsaphra @gchrupala Not a single result, but the debate over the role and interpretability of attention in MLMs definitely should be represented. Not just the "is attention interpretable" stuff but Clark / Voita's work and the trend since to map attention distributions to syntax.

EnglishGibson That use of "nächst-" which doesn't mean "next" (spotted in Der Spiegel):
"Das Land in Tränen, nach dem nächsten Elfmeter-Fiasko".
Here, "dem nächsten" would translate as "the latest" or "[yet] another" (which makes sense in relation to the England team).

emilymbender I've learned that a key part of journalistic integrity is independence: sources don't get to review pieces before they go to press. But journalistic independence does NOT include misleading sources as to the topic of piece their being interviewed for.
