EnglishGibson Here are some German compound nouns in which the second noun of each compound seems redundant in English (at least on the face of it):

– Spielbetrieb
– Infektionsgeschehen
– Gefahrenlage
– Reisetätigkeit

SoVeryBritish How to warn someone not to hit their head:

1. Wait until they’ve hit their head
2. Say “ooh, careful”

EmilyGorcenski I love how some folks have been quarantining since before it was mandatory, because they knew it was bad, are still quarantining, because it’s bad, will continue ti quarantine because they know it’ll keep being bad, and then will have ti quarantine again when the second wave hits

alicegoldfuss Whenever I post about D&I initiatives and hiring URMs, people say: but where do I find them?

And this is the wrong approach.

You are not hunting down and trapping URM candidates. You are building a habitat at your company and letting them find you.

andersem I spent 5 years on a 4-person team trying to get the US to import 1 very simple idea (putting stuff between car & bike lanes).

It worked, after 40 years of prior attempts, because we star-spangled it & avoided mentioning it came from anywhere else.

jasonbaldridge One concern I have about benchmarks that consolidate many datasets is that it may further increase the general reluctance that many have to actually dig in to particular examples and do in depth error analysis.

LeonDerczynski @WWRob @jasonbaldridge Annotation is the best way of understanding your data well, in depth, and cheaply - I've found nothing that comes even close to giving the insights that a single annotation-reflection-annotation cycle can, and you can do that in two hours!
