wayfu i just realized that the phrasing "how someone looks" is a sneaky device for shifting responsibility. they don't "look" or do anything really. WE look, yet THEY get the active voice.

brynguist them: how are you doing?

me, in my head: last night I dreamed that I was writing an endless cover letter to apply for the position of Sleeping and the stress of writing paragraph after paragraph about why I deserve to sleep kept waking me up

me, out loud: fine, busy

StefanMuelller 3.

geeky_bhavani You don't have to do ML.

We all like two things about @spacy_io
1. Building NLP models easily
2. Visualize complex NLP topics using their visualization tools.

Every ML problem needs a cool frontend person who can express it to the users.

sarahshulist 8 yo explained to 4 yo that a vowel is a letter than can make more than one sound, so 4 yo said c must be a vowel. He wants me to explain why it’s not and I’m like “well it can’t be the nucleus of a syllable”. Husband is cracking up bc I can’t figure out the non linguist answer.

sarahshulist @qpheevr @ErikaAlpert Right, I mean at the core I want to dig in to how letters aren’t sounds, but both of them are going to flip their shit if I get in to that. We save the real critical stuff for contradicting everything grandma tells them about what boys and girls are like

qpheevr @sarahshulist @ErikaAlpert Indeed! I just don’t think it’s possible to come up with a definition for the non-linguistic meaning that a bright four-year-old couldn’t poke holes in, so you might as well just say, “For the purposes of school, ‘vowel’ is a name for this arbitrary set of graphemes.”

sarahshulist @ErikaAlpert @qpheevr I mean I know the truth. I just also know my extremely anxious 8 year old is not ready for this argument with his teachers yet. I have to consider age appropriate linguistics lessons
