kykel @EnglishGibson Passiert mir auch oft (z.B. Schüler siezen, mit denen ich per du bin), weil es ein Automatismus ist. Sag einfach "He, wir waren doch schon beim du."

nsaphra "A mathematical theory of semantic development in deep neural networks" arxiv.org/abs/1810.10531 is really cool! Saxe et al. theoretically demonstrate why even in linear networks, extra layers will bias SGD towards learning broad categories before fine-grained distinctions. pic.twitter.com/RQ2TIsZP23

emilymbender @deliprao @terrible_coder I call the process of creating my regular weekly schedule for each quarter “retetrising”.

deliprao @terrible_coder ooo ... I love calendar defrag, and I am aggressive about it.

terrible_coder @deliprao Minimize context switching by grouping one-on-ones, I'd imagine.

deliprao More people reporting to you -> more 1-1s -> less personal productivity. How do folks minimize this while not compromising on being available to people who report to you? I have some thoughts but want to see what worked for you all.

@chilltrans @woollythinker @EnglishGibson Same. I think it's quite common to swing awkwardly, especially when switching between email and meatspace, and especially with transient contacts - people probably feel it's not worth the effort to firmly establish the Anredeform.

EnglishGibson @cliff1976 Well since he’d offered me the du by email and I’d accepted it by calling him du in person when we met, you’d have thought damit wäre die Sache geklärt. But no!

EnglishGibson Hey, dude who I cautiously siezt in my first email contact via eBay Kleinanzeigen and who duzt me in reply: why did you suddenly siezen me when we met in person and I’d already duzt you several times, following what I thought was your lead?

brynguist Let's replace "everyone has the right to their own opinion" with "everyone has the right to their own idiolect" and throw in a "you are morally accountable for every opinion you have that impacts other people" for good measure

redpony New language model: sample a vector, it defines PCFG probabilities, these generate a sentence. Marginally not context free, but conditionally context free → easy inference! Decent LM, good grammar induction. Intern project #2 from Yoon Kim at @DeepMindAI. arxiv.org/abs/1906.10225

When I look at your conference poster,

1) I read the title,
2) I look for an example illustrating the data/phenomenon you are working on.

Please don't make step 2 hard.

nsaphra When you meet someone who's overcome a lot, there are 2 natural reactions: "I could never do that" or "I bet it's not that hard". When I advise newly disabled coders, I need to move them past both reactions.

It IS that hard, and you CAN do it.

BasiliskosArt Far too often at poster sessions, I see people with huge paragraphs of text. That’s BAD, but no one says anything and it becomes normalized. Teach good design skills. We need more art in science! That main idea sentence should be your TITLE, the other material should be DATA!
