honnibal To clarify slightly: predicting embeddings instead of word IDs always seemed sort of obvious, so I wondered why it wasn't done. The (maybe well known?) answer is that L2 loss doesn't work well at predicting embeddings. Kumar and Tsvetkov introduce a new loss to solve this.
