emilymbender Dear world -- I'm happy to forward job announcements to our fabulous students. However, I. am. not. your. HR. department. I won't write the job ad and I won't hand pick applicants. That is all.

davidjayharris Remember that Chinese “criminal faces” computer vision paper?

Turns out that their model is a smile detector. The “non-criminal” photos came from promotional headshots on the web (where people smile) and the “criminal” photos were official ID photos (where they don’t) twitter.com/freakonometric…

@EnglishGibson One example: I was at a jazz festival and a band leader greeted the "Lindyhop-Fraktion" (people who were doing the Lindy hop in front of the stage).

@EnglishGibson X-Fraktion to (humorously) denote a group united by a preference for X is quite common. I don't know to what extent it was influenced by RAF.

emilymbender I think this is a really nice antidote to all of the effort going into language modeling these days (and especially work that pretends that LMs represent 'meaning'.)

"Finally, it is not clear from the paper how much of the transfer and flip rules is hand-crafted and what comes from the data."

Not sure how to address this reviewer comment. Comrade, I described an algorithm. The algorithm is hand-crafted. It operates on the data.

I'm not even sure what they mean by "transfer rules" and "flip rules". I didn't use those terms.

I wouldn't belabor this if I hadn't gotten a similar comment in a CoNLL review. That one just stated this step requires language-specific rule creating. No, it doesn't. What gives?

I'm puzzled: what gives people the idea that language-specific rules must be involved when my paper doesn't mention any, and describes each step in mathematical notation that should leave little room for interpretation? Welp, I'll state their absence explicitly for CR.
