there_are_two_ @ani_nenkova I am also definitely not a hero for any of this. I'm just trying to do my job in a sustainable way, and while communication is part of my job, conferences are not the only or best means of communication, and they are definitely not sustainable in their current form.
there_are_two_ @ani_nenkova I acknowledge that for researchers younger than me this is much more complicated, because a corrosive you-must-show-your-face mindset is still prevalent amongst many people who decide whether they can continue with research and teaching. The best I can do is to fight this.
there_are_two_ @ani_nenkova I've only been to one conference per year since 2014, and I'm skipping this year entirely. I don't think I'll miss anything: I personally get much more out of small events, the conference output is online along with much discussion, and I email or skype people I want to talk to.
