EmmaSManning Should be working on my dissertation rn but instead I'm reading through my discord servers for patterns in emoji-react use... is it too late to completely change my dissertation topic?

emilymbender These are important points and I'm glad to see someone in your position making them. Even better would be to link them to the body of scholarship on real-world harms of biases collected & amplified by ML, including work by Latanya Sweeney, Safiya Noble, Ruha Benjamin, Deb Raji >> twitter.com/an_open_mind/s…

an_open_mind I do take exception with some of @OpenAI’s PR though. In particular, I don’t understand how we went from being too big a threat to humanity to be released openly to being ready to tweet, support customers or execute shell commands (beta.openai.com). 3/13

echodroff That 3 and a half gender estimate? It's more like 13 declension classes: 3 feminine, 3 neuter, 7 masculine.

And that animate vs inanimate divide? That's also more complicated. <3 Czech

rajiinio Patients are domain experts too.

Often, technologists only build for doctors, seek feedback from doctors, calibrate performance to preferences of medical practitioners. That's fine, but the affected population is more than just a test set - they also hold valuable expertise. twitter.com/jeggers/status…

Literature_Lady I have found that students today expect professors to be online 24/7. It is absolutely CRITICAL that you manage these expectations early and often. Twice this semester students have gone over my head because I didn't email them back within 12 hours ON THE WEEKEND.

Literature_Lady Pro tip: Students succeed less online than in F2F classes, your grading online increases 10x, and your email will increase at least 4x. Really think through what you assign. A 5 minute idea can become 25 hours of grading hell.

random_walker Why do they do this? One obvious motivation is to protect commercial interests threatened by regulation. A more subtle and depressing motivation is cultural: mocking regulators and feeling intellectually superior has long been common in the tech world as a bonding activity.

random_walker We like to complain that lawmakers don’t understand tech, but let’s talk for a minute about technologists who don’t understand the law. Actually, it’s much worse than that—many prominent technologists use their platforms to regularly spout willful misinformation about the law.

r_speer ftfy 5.8 is out!

I've updated ftfy, the ubiquitous text filter that does all it can to fix mojibake and other Unicode mistakes.

A user reported that Hebrew text wasn't being fixed, and this made me think about how to expand some of the trickier cases to non-Latin alphabets. pic.twitter.com/e6MoxVlaqw
